Activities and Excursions from Lilaia, Phocis
Lilaia, located on the northern slopes of Mount Parnassus, is an ideal base for anyone looking to combine nature, hiking, history, culture, and day trips. Its location makes it possible to explore, within relatively short distances, beautiful natural landscapes, traditional mountain villages, archaeological sites, and a wide range of activities throughout the year.
Hiking and Nature
Mount Parnassus offers an extensive network of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks through nature to more demanding routes for experienced hikers. From the wider Lilaia area, visitors can explore trails towards Polydrosos and Eptalofos (Agoriani), walking through forests of fir and pine trees, alongside streams, springs, and lush vegetation.
One of the most interesting routes in the area is Trail 22, connecting Polydrosos with Eptalofos and continuing towards Mount Parnassus. The area offers beautiful scenery and is particularly appealing to visitors who want to experience the mountain away from the crowds.

For more experienced hikers, Mount Parnassus also offers longer routes, including sections of the E4 European long-distance path. One of the most spectacular options is the route connecting Eptalofos with Delphi, crossing the fir forests of Parnassus before reaching the famous archaeological site.
For nature lovers and those who enjoy exploring the outdoors, mushroom foraging is one of the most fascinating activities Mount Parnassus has to offer. Depending on the season and weather conditions, its forests and mountain slopes are home to a wide variety of wild mushrooms, including morels, porcini, Lactarius, parasol mushrooms and many other species. A mushroom-foraging walk is a wonderful opportunity to wander through the forest, discover beautiful corners of the mountain and experience the natural surroundings up close. Wild mushrooms should always be collected and consumed with care and only when each species has been identified with absolute certainty.
The Springs of the Kifisos River and Polydrosos
A beautiful nearby excursion is the area around the springs of the Boeotian Kifisos River, between Lilaia and Polydrosos. Platanus trees, running water, and rich vegetation create a peaceful setting for walking, relaxing, and enjoying nature.
The area also combines natural beauty with historical and religious landmarks, making it an excellent destination for a leisurely half-day excursion.

Kokkini Stegi Climbing Area
Kokkini Stegi is a small climbing area near the village of Lilaia (Lower Agoriani) on Mount Parnassus, offering easy access and shade in the afternoon. The routes are of moderate difficulty, making Kokkini Stegi ideal for beginners and climbing schools.
All routes have their names marked at the base. The routes are equipped with 10 mm stainless-steel bolts, and all of them have anchors with lower-off points.

Ancient Lilaia and Historical Sites
Lilaia itself has an important archaeological heritage. The archaeological site of ancient Lilaia is associated with the worship of the river god Kifisos and preserves remains from the ancient settlement.
A visit to the site offers an opportunity to discover a lesser-known part of the history of Phocis and to understand the importance of the area in antiquity.
The exploration can continue towards Polydrosos, where visitors can discover older paths, churches, and landmarks connected with the history of the region. The area around the springs of Kifisos is particularly attractive for combining a walk in nature with cultural sightseeing.
Eptalofos – Agoriani
Just a short drive from Lilaia lies Eptalofos, also known as Agoriani, one of the most picturesque mountain villages of Mount Parnassus.
The village is a popular starting point for hiking routes through the fir forest and is also ideal for a more relaxed outing, with traditional cafés, restaurants, and beautiful mountain scenery.
For visitors interested in longer hikes, Eptalofos is also an important point on the E4 route towards Delphi.

Vagonetto – A Unique Mining Experience
For something completely different, a visit to the Vagonetto – Fokis Mining Park is highly recommended. The park offers a fascinating insight into the history of bauxite mining in the region.
Visitors can explore the old 850 Gallery, discover the history of mining through the exhibition areas, and experience the interactive digital section. One of the highlights is the small mining train, the Vagonetto, which recreates the experience of travelling through the mine as the miners once did.
The experience is particularly interesting for families with children, but also for adults who want to discover a less familiar part of the industrial history of Phocis.
Vagonetto can easily be combined with a day trip towards Gravia, Amfissa, or Delphi. A reservation is recommended for the underground tour, as places on the guided visits are limited.
Delphi and Arachova
Lilaia is also an excellent starting point for day trips to two of the most famous destinations in Central Greece.
Delphi combines one of Greece's most important archaeological sites with spectacular mountain and sea views. Visitors can explore the Sanctuary of Apollo, the ancient theatre, the archaeological museum, and the surrounding landscape of Mount Parnassus.
Arachova, on the other hand, is perfect for a more lively mountain excursion, with picturesque streets, traditional restaurants, cafés, local products, and beautiful views. It is also a popular base for activities on Mount Parnassus.

Winter Activities on Mount Parnassus
During the winter months, Lilaia is an excellent base for excursions towards the higher slopes of Mount Parnassus and the Parnassos Ski Centre.
Depending on the weather and snow conditions, visitors can enjoy skiing and other winter activities, or simply take a day trip into the snowy mountain landscape.
The surrounding villages are particularly atmospheric during winter, offering the perfect setting for a warm meal or coffee after a day outdoors.
A Base for Many Different Experiences
One of Lilaia's greatest advantages is that visitors do not have to choose between nature, history, and excursions. A day can begin with a peaceful walk around the springs of Kifisos, continue with a hike through the forests of Mount Parnassus, and end with a visit to an archaeological site, Vagonetto, or one of the nearby mountain villages.
From Lilaia, visitors can experience a quieter and more authentic side of Parnassus — through its forests and trails, springs and rivers, ancient monuments, traditional villages, and unique experiences just beyond the region's main tourist routes.
Whether the goal is a relaxing escape into nature, an active hiking holiday, a cultural journey, or a series of day trips and outdoor adventures, Lilaia is an excellent base for discovering Phocis and Mount Parnassus.
